Birmingham A–Z

Bostin'

Bostin' is a West Midlands word, especially from the Black Country, meaning excellent or really good. "That was a bostin' night" is high praise.

In practice

The word is strongest in the Black Country towns west of Birmingham, but it is widely understood across the city and appears on café names, pub menus, beer labels and souvenir mugs. Its origin is unclear; it is often linked to "busting" in the sense of bursting, full, very good. Like many regional words, it is used affectionately and often a little self-consciously, as a badge of local identity.

Why it matters to newcomers

You will see bostin' in local businesses' names and hear it when people want to show where they are from. It is a compliment; if someone calls your cooking bostin', you have done well.
